Trying New Art Technique: Stress and Relief

I tried a new art technique I thought would be fun, turns out it was not fun for me! For a long time I've admired a looser artistic style. I love watching people sketch with paint and then bring a piece to life with little details. I also like the idea of creating in a short time frame, I hear it helps stop overthinking. So I gave it a go, trying my hand at quick compositions and I hated it! Mainly because it felt so stressful and anxiety provoking. It felt like the constraints that were supposed to feel freeing actually freaked me out. My nervous system is not built for that kind of unpredictability in my art yet. 😅 Not to give up completely, I tried again, but with fewer freedoms. I allowed myself some planning and the time to put down a neat wash. Scribbling details with watercolour pencil with no time constraint felt relaxing. I tried @ajamesdraws suggestion of a grid of the same object, limiting myself to just one colour. There's definitely safety in numbers. And full disclosure - I know these are not my masterpieces and that's ok. But I think it's important to show you the experiments that happen along the way. What's something you're in the messy middle of learning?
